ChatGPT now has one search experience for finding past chats, projects, documents, files, and images. OpenAI announced the expanded search on July 14, 2026, for ChatGPT on the web, iOS, and Android. It is available across all ChatGPT plans.
Quick answer
Open the ChatGPT sidebar and select the search control. Enter a memorable phrase, project name, file name, or subject from the item you want to find. You can then narrow the results by content type and open a matching chat, project, file, or image directly.
This is different from asking ChatGPT to search the web. Sidebar search looks through content connected to your ChatGPT account and workspace; ChatGPT Search looks for information on the public web.
How to find an old chat or file
- Open ChatGPT on the web, iPhone, iPad, or Android.
- Open the sidebar if it is collapsed.
- Select the search control near your chats and projects.
- Enter the most distinctive words you remember.
- Use the content-type filters if the first result list is too broad.
- Select a result to open the original chat, project, file, document, or image.
Start with a phrase that is likely to appear only in the item you need. A client name, uncommon sentence, document title, or project-specific term will usually be more useful than a broad word such as “report” or “meeting.”
What the new search can find
OpenAI says the unified search covers:

The result list is designed to take you back to the original item. It is not a new folder system and does not move your content.
Search more effectively
If a broad query returns too many results, add a second clue. Instead of searching for budget, try summer launch budget or the name of the project where you discussed it.
Use filters when you already know what kind of item you need. If you remember uploading a PDF, narrow the results to files or documents. If the information came from a conversation, focus on chats. This is faster than opening projects one by one.
Search also works well as a recovery tool when you remember the content but not where you saved it. A sentence copied from a document, a product name from an image discussion, or a distinctive instruction from an old prompt can be enough to locate the original item.
If a chat or file does not appear
Check these points before assuming the item is gone:
- Confirm that you are signed into the same ChatGPT account and workspace where the item was created.
- Remove any content-type filter that could be hiding the result.
- Search for a shorter phrase, then try a second distinctive term.
- Look inside the relevant project if you remember where the work belonged.
- Update the ChatGPT mobile app if the search interface looks different from the current web version.
- Check your workspace’s retention and access settings if the content belongs to a Business, Enterprise, or Edu workspace.
Deleted content, content removed under workspace retention rules, and items that you no longer have permission to access may not be available. Search does not override account permissions or retention policies.

Search inside a project
Projects keep related chats, files, and instructions together. If you know the conversation belongs to a project, searching for the project name or a phrase used inside it can take you back to the relevant material. OpenAI’s Projects documentation also recommends the search-chats feature for revisiting discussions within a project.
Moving a chat into a project changes the context available to that chat, but it does not require you to remember its exact location later. The unified search is useful when you work across several projects or switch between mobile and web.
Privacy and workspace access
Search makes existing account content easier to locate; it does not make private chats or files public. Access still depends on your account, workspace membership, sharing settings, and administrator controls.
On managed workspaces, retention windows and regional data settings continue to apply. If a result contains business or client material, follow your organization’s policies before sharing it or moving it into another project.
